How AI is used in construction estimating (and what BYOK means)

AI will not price a job for you, and it should not. But it is genuinely useful for the repetitive reading work that sits around a takeoff: pulling the finishes listed on a drawing, working out the scale, and reading a title block. Done well, it removes keying-in, not judgement. Here is what it actually does, and what to watch for.
Where AI helps on a takeoff
- Reading finishes: a drawing's finishes schedule or legend can be read automatically, so the finish codes and descriptions are pulled out instead of typed in by hand.
- Reading the scale: AI can read the scale stated in a title block and set it for you, with the option to confirm it against a known dimension.
- Title-block details: drawing number, revision and title can be lifted into a drawing register automatically.
The pattern is the same in each case: AI handles the reading and fills in a first draft; you stay in control and check it. The measuring, the decisions and the rates remain yours.
What AI should not do
Be wary of tools that claim to measure quantities or price work end to end with no checking. Drawings are inconsistent, and a wrong quantity is worse than a slow one. The reliable use of AI today is assistive: it speeds up the reading, you verify the result.
What "BYOK" means
BYOK stands for bring your own key. Instead of a vendor bundling AI costs into your subscription (and marking them up), you create your own account with an AI provider, generate an API key, and the software uses that key. The provider bills you directly, at cost.
For estimators this has two advantages: transparency (you see exactly what the AI costs, typically pennies per drawing, with no markup) and control (you decide when AI runs, and you can turn it off entirely). It also means AI is optional rather than something you pay for whether you use it or not.
A note on data
When you use an AI feature, only the page you choose to send goes to the AI provider, through your own key. The rest of your project, your drawings, measurements and exports, stays where it is. If you never enable an AI feature, nothing is sent at all.
